LA Ruta Masterclass on Poverty Reduction and the Millennium Development Goals

By signing the Declaration on the Millennium Development Goals, the leaders of 189 countries committed themselves to reduce the amount of people living in extreme poverty by half by the year 2015. In the case of Latin America this implies bringing the amount of people living in extreme poverty back from a total of 21 million (in 1990) to 10,5 million people (in 2015).
However: what are we talking about when we speak about ‘the poor’ and ‘poverty’? Can poverty be measured by only looking at income and consumption, as is done in the Millennium Development Goals? And if not, what are the consequences for poverty reduction programs and development strategies in general?
Andrea Franco (economist, University of bogota, Colombia) will elaborate on these questions on the basis of the situation in Latin America during a Masterclass organised by LA Ruta on thrusday 14th of April in Maastricht.

Urban youth matters

Hangjongeren, criminele jongeren en jeugdbendes vormen een aanslag op de leefbaarheid van veel wijken in grote steden, zowel in Nederland als in Midden-Amerika. De roep om een harde repressieve aanpak is groot. Tegelijk worden ook benaderingen ontwikkeld die meer omvattend van aard zijn, vooral op het niveau van de wijk. Op dit lokale niveau wordt inzichtelijk hoe de problematiek van jeugddelinquentie verbonden is met de dynamiek in de wijk als geheel. Het is cruciaal om jeugdbeleid en de aanpak van jeugddelinquentie te integreren in de wijkontwikkeling.
In samenwerking met andere organisaties organiseert Cordaid een tweedaagse conferentie over dit thema.

Gender and sexuality are increasingly recognized as central to ‘development’. This is also reflected in the millennium development goals. However feminist and sexual rights movements in Latin America are countered by the proliferation of social conservative movements, also known as “pro-life” movements. On Monday 30 of May LA Ruta organizes a Masterclass on these “pro-life” movements in the context of Latin America and in post- revolutionary Nicaragua specifically. During this Masterclass Silke Heumann, lecturer at the Institute of Social Studies in The Hague, will reflect upon the emergence and growth of the ‘pro-life’ movement and discuss what the pro-life movement is, who is part of it, what its strategies are and how it relates to regional and international organizations and networks.

NALACS, de Nederlandse Vereniging van Latijns-Amerikaanse en Caribische Studies, nodigt je uit om je scriptie in te sturen en in aanmerking te komen voor de jaarlijkse award. Elk academisch jaar wordt er een prijs van 500 euro toegekend aan de beste MA scriptie over de regio. Studenten of hun begeleiders kunnen de scripties indienen voor de deadline van 1 september 2011.
